How the Reds made the playoffs, by the numbers

play

Twenty numbers that define the Reds season and what’s at stake next:

12 — Players who finished on the active roster who were not on the 26-man list on Opening Day, including three touted prospects who debuted this season (Chase Burns, Sal Stewart, Zach Maxwell). Three more were on the injured list (Andrew Abbott, Austin Hays, Tyler Stephenson). Three were acquired in trades (Ke’Bryan Hayes, Miguel Andujar, Zack Littell). The three others: Will Benson, Noelvi Marte, Connor Phillips.

17 — Players on the final active roster with no playoff experience, making the Reds the least playoff-tested team in the 12-team field.

2,033 — Career managerial wins for Terry Francona, 12th all-time.

.564 — Francona’s postseason winning percentage as a manager (44-34 in 11 playoff appearances with Boston and Cleveland).

7 — Most games above .500 (Aug. 19).

4 — Most games below .500 (3 times, most recently May 14).

5 — Longest winning streak (twice, June 6-10 and Sept. 17-21).

5 — Longest losing streak (Aug. 25-30).

3 — Rookies in bullpen (Burns, Maxwell, Phillips).

3 — Rookies in bullpen who have thrown 100 mph this season.

32 — Career-high saves for Emilio Pagán after being tapped as de facto closer first week of season (including three in three days over the Reds’ final four games).

33 — Career saves for Pagán in eight previous seasons in the big leagues.

2.87 — All-Star starter Andrew Abbott’s ERA this season, making him the first Reds pitcher with enough qualifying innings to record a sub-3.00 ERA since Trevor Bauer (1.73) won the Cy Young Award in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season — first in a full season since Sonny Gray in 2019 (2.87).

1-5 — Reds’ record this season against the Dodgers, their first-round playoff opponent.

3-3 — Reds’ record this season against the Phillies, their would-be second-round opponent.

33-33 — Reds’ record against the nine other playoff teams this season.

30 — Years since Reds last won a playoff series (swept the Dodgers in first round, 1995).

2-13 — Reds’ record in postseason games since that 1995 sweep of the Dodgers.

12 — Years since Reds last qualified for playoffs during a full season. They lost to the Pirates in the one-game wild-card round. (Note: they also qualified during the 60-game pandemic-shortened season of 2020, when the field was expanded to 16 teams).

1 — Reds World Series appearances/titles in the last 48 seasons (1990).
