Patriots vs. Jets: Andy Borregales field goal extends lead to 24-14


A short week concludes for the New England Patriots as they return to Gillette Stadium for a Thursday night matchup against the New York Jets.

In their first prime time home game since the 2023 season, the Patriots will look to extend their current winning streak to eight games. Meanwhile, the Jets, who sold off their top two defensive players at the trade deadline, find themselves winners of their last two games after starting the season with seven straight losses.

First Quarter

The Jets won the toss and elected to receive, putting the Patriots defense on the field first vs. Justin Fields and Co. After converting an opening third-and-1 on the ground, Fields’ legs picked up another fresh set of downs on a 14-yard scramble. New York then converted their third third-down of the drive to set up in the red zone. Facing a third-and-7, New York picked up a fresh set of downs again as Fields found AD Mitchell through the air. Then inside the 10, the Jets needed just two plays to find the end zone as Fields kept it himself from five yards out. [Patriots 0 : 7 Jets]

Second Quarter

New England’s offense got on the move off an eight-yard completion to Stefon Diggs which then drew an unsportsmanlike conduct to tact on 15 more yards. Keeping the offense on the field on fourth-and-2, Maye found DeMario Douglas for seven yards and a first-down. Maye then converted a third-down threw the air to Diggs to move the unit inside the red zone. After picking top a third-down on the ground, a flip to TreVeyon Henderson the next play saw the back pushed into the end zone for a score. [Patriots 7 : 7 Jets]

The Jets faced a third-and-9 to start their next possession, where Fields’ pass was complete to Mason Taylor but short of the sticks. New York punted away.

Quickly back with the ball, a play-action pass to Hunter Henry picked up 23 yards to kick start New England’s next drive. A pass back to Henry then converted a third-and-7 to move the ball back across midfield. Maye then bought time to find a wide open Mack Hollins over the middle for a 19-yard gain before going back to the receiver for another 20 yards. One play later, Henderson found the end zone from seven yards out. [Patriots 14 : 7 Jets]

New York’s next drive again opened with a third-down, where Fields let one go down field to Mitchell which fell incomplete through the receivers’ arms forcing another punt.

The Patriots moved the chains once on their next drive before Maye’s third-down pass downfield to Stefon Diggs fell incomplete.

Backed up inside their own 20, back-to-back runs against started the Jets possession in another third-down situation which Field’s pass to an open Mitchell again fell incomplete on the other side of the two-minute warning. New York punted again.

With 1:46 remaining in the half, New England was set-up with a potential double-score opportunity. Facing a third-and-6 after a holding call on Will Campbell, Maye was brought down for a sack but an illegal contact penalty in the secondary gifted New England a fresh set of downs. At the 50-yard line with 20 seconds remaining, back-to-back passes to Henderson and Diggs picked up first downs and moved the ball to the 28. A run set up a 45-yard field goal which Andy Borregales pushed just wide right.

Third Quarter

New England’s first possession of the second half opened with a third-and-7, where Maye found Diggs for just six yards until replay assist ruled the pass incomplete. The Patriots punted.

Breece Hall started things for the Jets in the second half with back-to-back runs to pick up an opening first-down. A zone read keeper by Fields then went for 11 yards to move New York over midfield. Things then went backwards due to an intentional grounding penalty which eventually forced a punt as Fields’ screen pass on third-and-16 gained just two yards.

A pass over the middle to Mack Hollins started the Patriots drive with a 17-yard gain to set up shop just shy of midfield. Two plays later, Maye avoided a rush off a play-action fake and somehow found Diggs crossing the field for a 21-yard gain. Maye then worked the sideline and flipped one back to the receiver for another 18-yard pickup. Down inside the 10-yard line, Maye found TreVeyon Henderson through the air for a touchdown. Down two scores, two straight completions to Mason Taylor quickly got the Jets across midfield. Slowly working their way outside the red zone, Fields bought time in the pocket to his left before finding a wide open John Metchie, who broke free after Craig Woodson tripped, for a 22-yard touchdown. Fourth Quarter

A first-down holding call on Jack Westover pushed New England backwards into a first-and-20 situation. Maye found Henry to get the yardage back to set up a third-and-10, where the QB found Douglas on a crosser for a 26-yard catch-and-run. Over midfield on third-and-5, Maye again found Diggs to move the chains and set the unit up outside the red zone. A second-down sack, however, pushed New England into a third-and-15 where a jump pass to Henderson picked up just two yards. Andy Borregales’ 44-yard field goal was then good.
