LSU football is searching for its next head coach. The search is wide open right now, but one name speculators love to throw out there is Buffalo Bills OC Joe Brady.
Brady spent one year on staff at LSU, serving as the Tigers’ passing game coordinator in 2019. LSU’s offense posted record-setting numbers with QB Joe Burrow throwing to Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson. Brady accepted an OC job with the Carolina Panthers after LSU’s title run.
The Panthers’ offense struggled under Brady, but Brady remained in the NFL and landed with the Bills. Eventually, the Bills promoted Brady to OC, and the offense has been one of the best in the NFL with Brady at the helm.
Brady has the qualifications to garner interest for head coaching jobs — at the college and NFL level.
LSU fans would certainly be intrigued with Brady returning to Baton Rouge. Penn State fans have mentioned Brady, too, as Brady spent time on James Franklin’s staff as a young assistant. Is Brady a serious candidate?
Will Joe Brady be LSU football’s next head coach?
The short answer: Probably not.
Brady doesn’t have much to gain from taking a college head coaching job right now. Brady is on track to be an NFL head coach, a job with a better quality of life than the one leading an SEC program. A school would have to make a significant offer to catch Brady’s attention, and most programs don’t want to pay what it would take for a 36-year-old who’s never been a head coach before.
Brady has a good situation right now. As long as he’s calling plays for Bills’ QB Josh Allen, his offenses will score points. Even if the right NFL offer doesn’t come this year, he can wait it out another season in Buffalo.
If LSU swings and misses on a few candidates, perhaps it does make a godfather-level offer to Brady, but that scenario appears unlikely. Expect LSU to hire a coach with head coaching experience at the collegiate level.
