FOXBOROUGH — The NFL is a tough business and nobody knows that better than Mike Vrabel.
The Patriots head coach was fired by the Titans following the 2023 season, and he went on to serve as a consultant with the Cleveland Browns last year before landing the gig in New England. As for Tennessee, they went on to hire Brian Callahan, who was dismissed this week ahead of Vrabel’s return to Nissan Stadium, having finished with a 4-19 record during his tenure as Titans head coach.
And on Wednesday, Vrabel revealed that he actually reached out to Callahan after the news came out.
“Yeah, sure, of course I did,” he said. “I mean, I don’t want to see anybody that shares a job with you get let go. That’s a tough feeling with family and school. Whether it’s in college or pro, we’re in the media every single day.
“And there’s a human element to this that I don’t want to forget. I just remember all those coaches or people that reached out after I was let go. I think that that’s important because nobody texts when you lose, they all text when you win. So, it’s a good reminder.”
However, when asked about his reaction, he made it clear that his focus is on his current team and preparing for Sunday’s matchup.
“I just had a focus here. And again, the surprises in our business shouldn’t be surprises,” he said. “Things happen in this league, and that’s a decision that they made. I didn’t have a particular reaction to it other than trying to get ready for the game on Sunday.”
