Khalil Rountree Jr. not seeking war with Jiri Prochazka, but ready for it
UFC 320 fighter Khalil Rountree Jr. spoke to MMA Junkie and reporters at media day for his featured bout vs. Jiri Prochazka on Saturday in Las Vegas.
LAS VEGAS – Khalil Rountree Jr. wants to avoid having to get into a war with legendary brawler Jiri Prochazka, and understandably so.
Prochazka (31-5-1 MMA, 5-2 UFC) has built quite a reputation for himself in MMA, getting into numerous violent fights where, more often than not, he gets violent finishes. However, if that’s what’s needed to get the win, Rountree Jr. (14-6 MMA, 10-6 UFC) is willing to go through the fire to get his hand raised at Saturday’s UFC 320 – which takes place at T-Mobile Arena.
“I hope not, (but) I’m ready for whatever,” Rountree Jr. told MMA Junkie and other media at Wednesday’s media day. “Honestly, everything right now is light-hearted, but like I’m prepared for whatever. I think after that Alex fight, I proved to myself how far I can go and how far I’m willing to go if the fight goes there, you know what I mean? But am I praying for this violent, bloody match? Absolutely not. If it goes there, it goes there. Can it go there? Absolutely, and I’m prepared.”
Rountree Jr. is coming off a unanimous decision win over former UFC light heavyweight champion Jamahal Hill in June. Prior to that, he had a challenge for the title, losing to then-champion Alex Pereira by TKO. In that championship fight, Rountree Jr. exceeded the expectations of many, giving “Poatan” a tough outing while taking a copious amount of damage. Rountree Jr. proved to the world and himself his vast durability.
Rountree Jr. is excited to return to the cage. He likes this pairing with Prochazka and what it could do for his title aspirations.
“Big fight, big fight,” Rountree Jr. said. “Strong competitor. Great matchup. Exciting matchup.”
