The improbable NFL career of Ben VanSumeren will continue. Ben VanSumeren isn’t just one of the more interesting MSU alumni stories in the NFL; his story might be one of the most underrated in the entire league in terms of how crazy and unlikely it has been. On Tuesday, it was made official that VanSumeren’s career will continue with the Philadelphia Eagles… as a fullback.
Why is VanSumeren’s story so interesting? Well, for one, VanSumeren started his career as a 3-star linebacker recruit for the University of Michigan. He has now switched to fullback full-time for the Eagles, a position that nearly went extinct in the NFL, and that move has breathed new life into his career and has given him some longevity with the Eagles.
Aside from the near-unprecedented move of VanSumeren to move from linebacker to fullback, it’s also just fascinating that he has hung around this long in the NFL, period. I don’t mean this as a slight at all, but VanSumeren was a good, but not great, player for MSU. He definitely wasn’t on the NFL radar at all during his time in college, at least, until his pro day. At MSU’s pro day in 2023, Ben VanSumeren put together some of the best measurements of any outside linebacker in the draft process, all but ensuring he would get a look at the next level, in what is now an infamous pro day.
Now, VanSumeren has a Super Bowl ring and will be back with the Eagles to help them defend their championship.
