Steelers DT Cam Heyward returns to practice amidst contract standoff

On Tuesday, something happened that hasn’t happened for all of Pittsburgh Steelers training camp and the preseason. Defensive tackle Cam Heyward took part in practice with his teammates. Heyward has been “holding in” this offseason looking for a raise over the two-year contract extension he signed last offseason but with just over two weeks to the start of the regular season, Heyward has decided to join his team.

According to head coach Mike Tomlin, Heyward even partook in team activities, which is a great sign that he will be on the field when the team takes on the New York Jets in Week One of the regular season.

Heyward signed his two-year, $29 million extension last offseason after the worst season of his career. Heyward then followed it up with one of his best and so he came back to the table and wants a raise. There’s been no word that Heyward’s return is a sign the two sides have come to an agreement or just that Heyward has conceded he isn’t getting a contract and decided it’s best to do what is best for the team and be happy with his$19.65 million in salary this season.

The Steelers are preparing to take on the Carolina Panthers in the team’s final preseason game and then it’s straight on to New York to battle the Jets in Week One of the regular season.
