As we enter the third week of NBA free agency, all eyes will be on the Golden State Warriors. The franchise is yet to make a move this summer, despite being linked with numerous players and having Jonathan Kuminga’s restricted free agency to deal with. Nevertheless, there’s still plenty of time for Golden State to bring in some fresh faces to help boost the current rotation.
NBA Insider Marc Stein remains confident that both Al Horford and De’Anthony Melton will sign with the franchise in the near future. Stein shared his confidence during a July 20 edition of his “The Stein Line” newsletter, where he also noted that some of the holdup with the Warriors is due to the ongoing negotiations with Kuminga.
“We are indeed three full weeks into free agency now, but I still expect Al Horford and De’Anthony Melton to wind up in Golden State when their signing commitments are made public and official,” Stein wrote. “The Warriors’ free agency business has been held up in large part by their ongoing stalemate with restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga.”
Melton had begun to make a good impression with the Warriors before suffering a sprained ACL in November 2024. It makes sense that Steve Kerr would want to bring him back now that he’s healthy, especially as he would instantly be one of the better perimeter defenders on the roster.
Adding Horford also makes sense for the Warriors. He would provide floor spacing at the center position, along with defensive versatility and a winning mentality. A frontcourt pairing of Horford and Draymond Green could be a legitimate defensive pairing for the upcoming season.
For now, though, Warriors fans must continue to remain patient, as the franchise navigates what’s proving to be a slow and difficult summer.
